Scenic painting is a profession inbetween visual arts and (hand)crafts. The apprenticeship in Germany is usually following a dual education system, whereas the apprentice completes a one year training at school and two years working inside a company offering a trainee occupation. Apart from public theaters, there are also private companies or studios - some of them working for the film industry. Throughout Germany there's only one university offering scenic painting studies. Prerequisites for both educational paths are creative skill, proven by a portfolio presenting own artworks. Don't be discouraged when being rejected - persistence is bliss. Whoever really tries, will be sucessful in capturing his opportunity. If you need some help concerning german procedures for prospective scenic painter apprentices I'll be happy to answer your questions!
